ABA Therapy and Homeschool

For parents with  children with Autism homeschooling can be a strong tool to provide an education that is truly tailored to your child’s needs. Each child with Autism is unique, they have their own strengths and weaknesses. Homeschooling allows the parent to tap into this uniqueness and tailor their education to exactly what best suits their child.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can be a powerful tool for homeschooling, especially if you are working with a child who has specific behavioral or developmental needs, such as those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The ABA therapist comes to your home and creates an individualized plan for your child. This allows your child to remain in an environment they feel comfortable in.

Below are some ways ABA can be combined with a homeschool setting:

  1. Set Clear Goals and Objectives

In education, it is important to establish clear learning objectives, ABA therapy centers around measurable and observable behaviors.  The goals can include academic skills, social skills, communication skills, and daily living skills.

2.  Break Down Skills into Smaller Steps

A method used by ABA is called task analysis. Task analysis takes a complex skill and breaks it down into small and manageable steps. This method can be used in schooling as well. The academic skill can be broken down so that the individual can learn the skills at their own pace.

3. Reinforcement and Motivation

Positive reinforcement is a fundamental concept in ABA and it can be very effective in a homeschool setting. It involves providing a reward following a desired behavior, which increases the likelihood of that behavior being repeated.  Reinforcement can be used to teach new skills, improve behavior and encourage learning by focusing on the individuals strengths.

4. Data Collection

ABA uses data collection to monitor progress. While homeschooling, you can track how often your child exhibits certain behaviors and how quickly they are  mastering skills. The data can be used to help guide your child’s ABA plan.

5. Individualized Instruction

ABA is a very individualized process. Homeschooling also allows the parents to individualize their child’s academic plan. An Board Certified Behavior Analysis can work with you to create an individualized plan.
